Sabal Palmetto Palm (Cabbage Palm) - Native to Florida and coastal regions of North and South Carolina, and is the state tree of both Florida and South Carolina. The name "Cabbage Palm" comes from its edible immature leaves or "heart" which has a cabbage-like flavor. Sabal Palms have curved, costapalmate, fan shaped leaves with blades 3-4 long and petioles 3-6' long. Although when free of nutrient deficiencies, this species has a full, round canopy atop a trunk 10-16" in diameter and up to 40' in height, it is recommended that you purchase a tree that is about the height you want it to be as it only grows about an inch a year in our climate. When these palms are dug in Florida, they must cut the fronds because the go into shock and turn brown. This is called hurricane cut and the palm basically has to start all over. They have about a 70% survival rate. We carry both hurricane cut and "regenerated" sabal Palms. "Regenerated" means, they were dug, cut and put into a pot in Florida for 14 months. The root system has healed, you get 14 months worth of Florida growth on the fronds and they have about a 90% survival rate.
